Alloys are mixtures of metals with other metals and sometimes other non-metals. Steel is a mixture of mostly iron with small amounts of carbon, making it stronger than pure iron. The first alloy created by humans was bronze, which is mostly copper with around 10% tin and which is also stronger than copper alone. The Bronze Age marked the period when bronze became the material of choice for weapons and tools and first began around the 4th millennium BCE in the Ancient Near East.
