The most goals scored in the Olympic games men's football tournament is 13 and was first achieved by Sophus Nielsen (Denmark) at the 1908 and 1912 games in London and Stockholm respectively from 19 October 1908 to 4 July 1912. It was equalled by Anat Dunai (Hungary) at the 1968 and 1972 games in Mexico and West Germany respectively from 13 October 1968 to 10 September 1972.

Despite Nielsen's goalscoring feat, Denmark only ended up with a silver medal in both tournaments, losing to Great Britain 2-0 in 1908 and 4-1 in 1912.

Nielsen scored 11 goals in 1908 with 10 of those coming in the 17-1 semi-final rout of France (who were so disappointed they didn't even compete for bronze). He scored 2 in 1912 both against Norway during the quarter-finals.

Antal Dunai won gold in 1968 and silver in 1972 scoring 6 goals and 7 goals in the two Olympic tournaments. He scored a brace in the gold medal match against Bulgaria in 1968 to help his side win 4-1.
