The earliest book to feature engraved maps (rather than crude maps printed from woodcuts) was an illustrated edition of Ptolemy’s Cosmographia, which was produced in Bologna, Italy, in 1477. The work, translated by Giacomo d'Angelo da Scarperia, is also the first book with maps created by a known artist, Taddeo Crivelli.
The book, which contains 26 copperplate engravings, was for many years thought to have been produced in 1482. However, documents subsequently discovered in Bologna prove that the book, which was published by Dominicus de Lapis, had been printed in 1477.
