Published on 31 July 2016 to coincide with the official opening of the stage play, the script book for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child had sold 9,237,886 copies globally by 7 November 2020, according to figures collated from Nielsen BookScan and NPD BookScan. The plot of the play – which many have dubbed the "eighth Harry Potter story" – was composed by Jack Thorne, John Tiffany and J K Rowling (all UK) and the stage production debuted at the Palace Theatre in London's West End.

These sales figures comprise both the hardback and paperback versions of The Cursed Child published in 2016 and 2017, respectively; it does not factor in ebook sales. It's estimated that the book shifted more than 4 million copies in its first week on sale in the USA, Canada and the UK alone.

This puts The Cursed Child several million copies ahead of the tracked sales of the next best-selling playscripts: William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, though it ought to be highlighted that point-of-sale book sales data only started to be tracked comprehensively in the early 2000s so this doesn't take into account all of the sales up to then.
