Opened on 23 January 1997, the Tower of Terror at Dreamworld theme park in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, was the first rollercoaster to hit a speed of 100 miles per hour (160.9 kilometres per hour). At the time it opened, it was both the fastest and tallest rollercoaster in the world; it stands 377 feet 3.6 inches (114.9 metres) off the ground.
In 2010, the ride was refurbished and renamed the Tower of Terror II. Its top speed remains the same as its former incarnation – however, riders now face downwards for an even more terrifying experience.
As of May 2016, it was the joint-fifth fastest rollercoaster in the world, according to the Roller Coaster DataBase (rcdb.com), tied with Superman: Escape from Krypton at Magic Mountain resort in Valencia, California, USA.
