A fully licenced Spider-Man appears as a boss in a revised 1990 version of Sega's The Revenge of Shinobi, the first time that a comic-book character had moonlighted in a gaming franchise. The original 1989 release of the game had featured the Devil, who disguises himself as both Spidey and Batman. Sega subsequently acquired an official licence from Marvel for Spidey to appear properly.

Spider-Man was omitted from much later ports of the game owing to the Marvel licence expiring. When Sega originally acquired the licence, it was developing the Marvel action platformer The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin.
