Although Marvel vs. Capcom and Injustice are two of the biggest and most revered fighting game franchises, they weren't the first one-on-one brawlers to feature licenced superheroes. That accolade belongs to The Amazing Spider-Man and Captain America in Doctor Doom's Revenge!, developed by Paragon and released for home computers in 1989. Players alternated control between Captain America and Spider-Man as they strolled through fighting encounters with a stream of Marvel heavies including Rhino, Machete, Electro and the eponymous Doctor Doom. Although primitive by today's standards, the game boasted some of the base mechanics that are typically associated with modern fighting games.
