Following its reinvention as a 3D first-person shooter series in 1992, the Wolfenstein franchise has been producing new shooters for over 25 years. The first FPS in the series was Wolfenstein 3D, developed by id Software and released for home computers on 5 May 1992. Its most recent addition was Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, published by Bethesda and released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on 27 October 2017. The games feature an alternate-history/reality setting, with players using a combination of firepower and espionage to combat the Nazis and their supernatural forces. Interestingly, the first Wolfenstein game was a stealth maze-adventure, created by Muse Software in 1981. A landmark title in its own right, it's often credited as being the first stealth game.
Wolfenstein narrowly pips fellow id Software franchise Doom to the record. The first Doom game was released on 10 December 1993, while its 2016 reboot launched just over 22 years 5 months later – on Friday 13th, 2016.
