The original $1-m (£690,522) prize pool for 2016’s Halo World Championship swelled to $2.5 m (£1.72 m) thanks to micro-transactions made by players of Halo 5: Guardians. At the tournament – held in Hollywood, USA, on 18–20 March 2016 – the Counter Logic Gaming team gunned their way to victory.
As of July 2016, the tournament also sported the largest prize for a first-person shooter eSports tournament, beating even Valve's popular eSports FPS Counter-Strike. Inevitably, it was also the largest prize pool for a Halo tournament.
