The World Puzzle Federation, currently based in the Czech Republic, has organized an international puzzle contest since 1992. All of the challenges contested at the World Puzzle Championship are simple, logic-based puzzles that can be understood irrespective of your language.
The construction of crosswords is termed “cruciverbalism”.
