Many books by British children's author Roald Dahl have been given the big-screen treatment, but none has been more successful at the box office than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (USA/UK/Australia, 2005), as of 25 April 2016. According to The-Numbers.com, the second iteration of the film, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as the eccentric Willy Wonka, grossed $475,825,484 (£276.2 million) worldwide.
By contrast, the original 1971 movie adaptation, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (USA), starring Gene Wilder, only earned an estimated $4,000,000.
