In the year leading up to 27 December 2015, the most watched original movie broadcast on US cable television was the Disney Channel's Descendants (USA), a story centred on the younger relatives of some of Disney's most notorious characters. According to Nielsen data, on the day it aired (31 July 2015), the telecast averaged 6.6 million viewers, rising to 10.54 million after four days on release (live+3), and 12.2 million based on live+7 data.
Based on live+3 figures, this makes Descendants the fourth most watched telecast in the USA ever in a chart dominated by fellow Disney films. The only three movies above it are Teen Beach Movie (USA, 2013) with 11.92 million viewers, Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie (USA, 2009) with 13.25 million, and High School Musical 2 (USA, 2007) with 18.22 million.
Both Descendants and the High School Musical movies were directed by Kenny Ortega (USA).
