Dystopian plots have become a popular theme in young adult fiction in recent years, with more books in this genre being picked up and given the big-screen treatment than ever before. The most successful series in terms of global box-office ticket sales to date is The Hunger Games (USA, 2012–15), based on the trilogy of the same name by Suzanne Collins (USA). With the first of the four films debuting on 23 March 2012 and the final instalment closing on 25 February 2016, the four movies grossed a total $2,902,950,738 (£2.07 billion) worldwide, according to The-Numbers.com.
The movies each earned:
The Hunger Games (2012): $677,923,379 (£426.8 million)
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013): $864,868,047 (£519.8 million)
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014): $709,635,885 (£481.1 million)
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015): $650,523,427 (£465.9 million)
That means Catching Fire is also the highest-grossing dystopian book movie adaptation overall.
