The items that you pick up as you speed around the tracks are the life-blood of all the Mario Kart games. And it’s a sign of how important they are to the gameplay that in the interests of balance, Nintendo has chosen to remove, as well as add, items to every new Mario Kart game. With a total of 22 items that can be picked up, however, 2014’s Mario Kart 8 set a new record. It’s a close-run record, however: both Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart Wii boast 21 items that can be picked up (and the latter would jointly hold the record with Mario Kart 8 if it was still possible to pick up the Fireballs which appeared only in its online play, but Nintendo switched that off Mario Kart Wii’s online servers in May 2014). There are six items that have appeared in every single Mario Kart game: the Banana, Green Shell, Lightning, Mushroom, Red Shell and Star.
