British brothers John and Robert Naylor completed the first recorded walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End between 18 September and 18 November 1871. They covered an average of 25 miles (40 km) per day, but made many diversions for sightseeing en route. Owing to these, they ended up walking 1,372 miles (2,208 km) – more than double the distance of the journey as the crow flies.

The book about their walk was published only in 1916.
