Thanks to a number of downloadable content (DLC) packs, which also brought new karts (including some based on real-life Mercedes cars) and the ability to play as your Mii avatar, Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U lets gamers choose between more of Nintendo’s much-loved characters than any of its predecessors: 36, to be precise. Characters that made their first – and so far only – franchise appearance in Mario Kart 8 include Tanooki Mario, Wendy, Pink Gold Peach and Morton. Donkey Kong Jr made his only Mario Kart appearance in the original Super Mario Kart, while Mario Kart: Double Dash boasts two characters – Petey Piranha and Paratroopa – who never appeared in any other Mario Kart game.
