ITV's Hot Summer Night (a play transmitted in the UK on 1 February 1959 as part of the drama anthology series Armchair Theatre) featured TV's first interracial kiss, between English actress Andree Melly and Jamaican-born Lloyd Reckord. The pair had earlier performed the play on stage.
This has been a much-debated record, often wrongly attributed to a 1968 Star Trek episode called Plato's Stepchildren, in which a white man (Kirk, played by William Shatner) kisses a black woman (Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols) – deemed hugely controversial to US TV audiences at the time.
Other contenders have been an episode of I Love Lucy (USA), a Granada Play of the Week called You in Your Small Corner (UK, 1962), and the soap opera Emergency – Ward 10 (UK, 1964).
