While early rhythm games often featured licensed music, the advent of Sega’s music classic Space Channel 5 (Dreamcast, 1999) heralded the first celebrity cameo for the genre. That celebrity was none other than Michael Jackson, playing the part of Space Michael – a role that would feature more prominently in the game’s sequel, which was released in 2002.

"Space Michael" has to use his vocal ability against a singing robot.
