It may be a common feature of videogames today, but Operation: WinBack (Koei, 1999) – also known, simply, as WinBack – was the first third-person shooter to include a cover system that allowed players to hide around corners, while aiming and shooting when the opportunity arose.
It's a popular mechanic in the likes of Gears of War.
