The highest score ever set on Atari's 1983 arcade classic Star Wars is 1,000,000,012 points. It was achieved by a team of three students – Flavio Tozzi, Dave Roberts and Mike Ohren (all UK) – playing in shifts at Leeds University in West Yorkshire, UK, in June 1985. Their marathon game began at 12 pm on Saturday 15 June and continued until 2:46 pm the following Thursday (20 June). Their marathon raised £50 (about £136 [or $200] in 2015 money) for charity.
The original Star Wars arcade machine was rather more forgiving than most coin-op games. Soon after the game's release it became apparent that even a moderately skilled player could keep playing more or less indefinitely using the generous supply of extra lives and shields. As a result, setting a high score was a test of endurance as much as skill.
For the 1987 Twin Galaxies arcade tournament Atari made a special version that was much more difficult.
