No other feature film has been more critically acclaimed by the Visual Effects Society than The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), which received eight gongs at the inaugural VES Awards held on 19 February 2003.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers received the following awards at the Visual Effects Society Awards 2002: Best Visual Effects in an Effects Driven Motion Picture, Best Character Animation in a Live Action Motion Picture, Best Special Effects in a Motion Picture, Best Models and Miniatures in a Motion Picture, Best Visual Effects Photography in a Motion Picture, Best Effects Art Direction in a Motion Picture, Best Compositing in a Motion Picture, and Best Performance by an Actor in an Effects Film.

Three films are tied for second place with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006), Avatar (2009) and Gravity (2013) each picking up six awards.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy also takes the record for most VES Awards won by a movie franchise, having picked up a total of 12 across the series: eight for the second instalment, The Two Towers (2002), and four for the third and final movie, The Return of the King (2003).
