San Fransokyo, the futuristic melding of San Francisco and Japan that forms the setting for Disney’s Big Hero 6 (2014), was constructed by Disney Animation Studios as a complete digital simulation of a working city, using data from both real life cities to create a world that includes 83,000 buildings, 260,000 trees, 215,000 street lamps and 100,000 vehicles, populated by 701 unique characters with a total of 632,124 possible animation cycles, lit by an accurate simulation of 10 billion simultaneous rays of light.
Using an unprecedented level of computer processing power to run the Hyperion animation system, the complexity of Big Hero 6’s animation is estimated to be around four times that of Disney’s Frozen (2013).
