The youngest female chess player to achieve Grandmaster status (not to be confused with the lower-rated “Woman Grandmaster” title) is Hou Yifan (China, b. 27 February 1994). Hou met the requirements for Grandmaster status on 29 August 2008 at the age of just 14 years 184 days.
Hou Yifan is also the youngest ever Women’s World Chess Champion and only the third woman to ever break into the FIDE top 100 list.
She broke the record set in 1991 by the Hungarian chess player Judit Polgár, who became a grandmaster at the age of 15 years, 4 months, 28 days.
The youngest grandmaster overall is the Ukrainian player Sergey Karjakin, who was awarded the title when he was only 12 years and 7 months old.
