In December 2015 – some 28 years and 18 games after Metal Gear debuted as a videogame series in 1987 – eSports organization ESL launched the Metal Gear Online Global Championships, inviting players to compete in the online multiplayer section of 2015’s Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain. It was the first professional eSports tournament from Konami’s megalithic stealth series.
Konami had previously staged World Championship competitions in Metal Gear Online from 2008 – still 21 years after the release of the first Metal Gear game. It wasn't until 2015 that it officially entered the eSports arena.
