Starting in 2013, videogame giant EA began to narrow down the various different game-creation tools, or game engines, they use to make games, opting to use the Ignite Engine to power most sports games and the Frostbite 3 engine for shooters and adventure games. One notable exception to this division is Rory McIlroy PGA Tour (EA Tiburon, 2015), which, despite being a sports videogame, is the first and so far only such title to use the Frostbite 3 engine.
Rory McIlroy PGA Tour (EA Tiburon, 2015) is also the first game in the PGA Tour series designed for eighth-generation consoles as well as being the first game in the series for over 15 years not to be branded under the name of the former franchise frontman Tiger Woods.
