Many videogames have released updated versions of older games, often upgrading their graphics in the process, but few developers release older versions of current games. The MMO RuneScape was first published by developer Jagex in 2001 and has been constantly updated since that time. On 15 February 2013, the developer ran a poll for RuneScape players to measure the interest in re-releasing an older version of the game. After a strong response from veteran RuneScape fans, Jagex created Old School RuneScape (Jagex, 2013) an separate game based on a backup of the RuneScape source code from August 2007. Characters created on the regular version of the game can be transferred to the old-school game, but the older iteration is only available to paying subscribers.
In September 2015, Jagex released another version of its popular MMO DarkScape, which supported player-vs-player combat. Old School RuneScape "Deadman Mode" is a further separate iteration of Old School RuneScape that includes similar combat features.
