Guybrush Threepwood had appeared in five Monkey Island games between 15 October 1990 and 8 December 2009 – a total of approximately 19 years 54 days, as of 3 March 2016. The first game The Secret of Monkey Island (LucasArts) released in October 1990. The most recent game is (Telltale Games), which first released for PC in July 2009, but was later released for iOS on 23 February 2012. Broken Sword’s George Stobbart and French journalist Nicole "Nico" Collard had been running for 17 years 199 days as of the same date, but have released sequels with greater frequency.

The Leisure Suit Larry series has been running longer than Monkey Island, but the game's protagonist has not stayed the same throughout each game. Likewise, King Graham from the King's Quest series has appeared in games from between 1984 and 2015. However, the main series finished in 1998 and the 2015 game King's Quest was a reboot/reimagination rather than a continuation of the series. Another contender for this record was Tex Murphy (Chris Jones), but given that there was a 16 year gap between the fifth and sixth games, the latter was considered a "revival" under our longest-running guidelines.
