As the development of sports games for the first eighth-generation consoles got underway, EA announced that it would be using its proprietary Ignite Engine for most of its sports games in this console generation. Consequently Madden NFL 25 (EA Tiberon, 2013) became the first American Football videogame to employ the technology when it was released on 15 November 2013.

Development was concurrent on FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25 and NBA Live 14, but FIFA 14 hit the stores three days before Madden NFL 25, giving it the overall record for the first game to use the engine.
