In August 2015, Disney told shareholders that merchandising linked to Star Wars: The Force Awakens (USA, 2015) was expected to generate $5 billion (£3.4 billion) in revenue within a year of the film’s release. Combined with the widely accepted estimate that toy licensing from Star Wars generated around $12 billion (£8.3 billion) between 1977 and 2015, this puts revenue generated by Star Wars toys and other merchandise at an estimated total of $17 billion (£11.7 billion) spread across almost 40 years – an achievement no other movie franchise comes near to matching.
