On 6 June 2014, NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman (USA) became the first person to post a video from space to the video-sharing network Vine. Wiseman recorded the clip of Earth and the Sun from some 400 kilometres (250 miles) above our planet while on board the International Space Station. His message accompanying the post was: "1st Vine from space! Single Earth orbit. Sun never sets flying parallel w/terminator line."

Wiseman was following in the footsteps of fellow pioneering social-media astronauts Chris Hadfield (Canada), who shot to fame on YouTube with his version of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" in 2013 (the first music video filmed in space) and Steve Swanson (USA) who posted the first Instagram from space (a selfie of himself in the ISS's Cupola module) on 7 April 2014.
