Space epic No Man's Sky (Hello Games) features a possible 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 ("more than 18 quintillion") planets for players to land on and explore. The game's giant universe is procedurally generated and every planet is unique. Managing director Sean Murray confirmed on PlayStation.Blog that "Even if a planet is discovered every second, it’ll take 585 billion years to find them all!"
According to another developer post on blog.us.playstation.com (this time by Alex Wiltshire of Hello Games), No Man's Sky generates the whole of every planet at a lower level of detail, meaning that every distant mountain or object is a real place that you can visit.
The post also points out that most planets are barren, although a few will be dense with plant-life and animals. Planets that aren't too close or too far from the sun are the ones most likely to have life.
Hello Games is a UK developer based in Guildford, Surrey.
The game had no confirmed release date as of 17 September 2015.
