At the conclusion of his first-round match against Adrian Mannarino at the Australian Open on 17 January 2023, the 6-ft 10-in (2.08-m) American John Isner had served 14,039 aces on the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Tour. The 37-year-old right-hander, who turned pro in 2007, surpassed Ivo Karlović’s career tally of 13,728 aces in his third-round match against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon on 1 July 2022. Isner’s 14,039 unreturnable serves would be enough to win 3,509 four-point games of tennis or almost 585 six-game sets.
Isner has hit the most aces on the ATP Tour in seven separate seasons (2010, 2012–13 and 2016–19), recording a total of seven 1,000-plus seasons and a career high of 1,260 aces (second only to Karlović’s 1,447) in 2015.
According to atptour.com’s latest available data, the 43rd-ranked American had won 92% of 10,734 service games in 784 matches, including 79% of first-serve points, 16 Tour-level titles and more than $21.78 million (£17.56 million) in prize money.
“I’m actually very proud of that record,” said Greensboro, North Carolina native Isner after his straight-sets defeat to Sinner at Wimbledon. “I wish I could have broken it in a win, but to have set the all-time aces record at Wimbledon I think is very special. It’s a credit to how professional I’ve been to keep myself healthy for such a long time, to keep myself on the court to give myself the opportunity to hit those aces. I don’t pat myself on the back too much, but this one I think is pretty cool.”
