The largest breed of schnauzer is the giant schnauzer, which in accordance with the American Kennel Club's official standard for this breed requires males to stand from 65 to 70 cm at the withers, and for females to stand from 60 to 65 cm at the withers. It is noted for its large head, which is half as long as the dog's back length. It originated in Bavaria, Germany, during the 1600s, and is categorized as a working breed.
Three breeds of schnauzer are recognized – miniature, standard and giant. The miniature and standard in particular are superficially terrier-like, but they do not possess the typical terrier temperament. Their name "schnauzer" derives from the German for "snout", because of their heavily bearded snout.
