The first NRL Grand Final to be decided by a golden point was the 2015 all-Queensland final between North Queensland Cowboys and Brisbane Broncos at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on 4 October 2015. North Queensland Cowboys won 17–16.

The golden point was introduced at the start of the 2003 season with the 2015 Grand Final being the 90th game decided by this "sudden death" method.

The golden point was scored by Jonathan Thurston in the 83rd minute – a drop goal, which is worth one point. It earned North Queensland Cowboys their first ever Grand Final win and handed Brisbane Broncos their first Grand Final defeat in their seventh appearance.
