Following the H1N1 "swine flu" virus scare in 2009, medical engineers in Japan created the first robot that could exhibit the symptoms of the H1N1 flu virus. Intended for use in training doctors, the robot has a life-sized body and is coated in a human-like skin that "sweats" and uses animatronics to moan, cry and convulse like a person infected with H1N1. If the robot is not treated properly, the symptoms gradually worsen, leading to the robot stopping breathing and "dying". It was launched as a training aid in October 2009.
