The smallest country, in terms of population, to qualify for the UEFA European Championships is Iceland (population: 331,918), who confirmed their qualification for the 2016 European Championships in France following a 0–0 draw with Kazakhstan in Reykjavík, Iceland, on 6 September 2015.
Iceland finished second in their group behind Czech Republic and ahead of Turkey (pop. 74,930,000) and Netherlands (pop. 16,800,000).
Slovenia (pop. 1,988,292) had been the previous record holder when they qualified for Euro 2000.
Northern Ireland (pop. 1,811,000) would have been the record holders had Iceland not qualified as they also reached the European Championships for the first time by qualifying top of their group.
