As of 18 April 2022, there have been 246 spacewalks – also known as extra-vehicular activities (EVAs) – from the International Space Station.
This total includes 189 spacewalks in American space suits – called Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMUs) – and 57 in Russian Orlan ("Eagle") space suits. Typically the American suits are used by astronauts from NASA, as well as those from the European, Canadian and Japanese space agencies, while the Russian suits are used by the Russian Federation cosmonauts. However, the space station crew are trained to use both types of suit, and sometimes (particularly in the early years of the space station's construction) a Russian cosmonaut uses an American suit or vice versa.
2021 was an unusually busy year on the ISS, with 13 spacewalks carried out by the crew. This total included three spacewalks related to the arrival of the Nauka module and numerous spacewalks related to the ongoing efforts to upgrade the ISS's power systems.
