On 22 August 1997, Russian cosmonauts Anatoly Solovyev and Pavel Vinogradov performed a spacewalk inside the depressurised Spektr module of the Mir space station, whose hull had been breached by a collision with an unmanned Progress supply vehicle.
Their 3-hour 16-minute spacewalk to inspect and initiate repairs was one of the most hazardous in history. The conditions inside the damaged Spektr module were unknown. It was without power and probably contained debris from the collision that could be floating inside and potentially tear a spacesuit. During the spacewalk, US astronaut Michael Foale manned the docked Soyuz-TM spacecraft in the event that an emergency return to Earth was required.
