The most sumo wrestling top division (makuuchi) bouts contested in a career is 1,470 by Kyokutenhō Masaru (Mongolia) from 1998 to 27 July 2015.

Kyokutenhō Masaru took the record from Kaiō Hiroyuki on 14 May 2015 when he contested his 1,445th bout. Only one sumo wrestler, Oshio Kenji (1891), has had more career bouts that Kyokutenhō (1870) and the Mongolian is also the oldest ever first time yusho (tournament) winner – aged 37 when he won a competition.

Facing demotion to the second of the six divisions, he announced his retirement in July 2015 and will continue as a coach.
