The most gold medals won in the AIBA World Boxing Championships by an individual is six and was achieved by Félix Savón (Cuba) in the 91-kg category in 1986, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997.

Savón also won three Olympic gold medals and is widely regarded as one of the best heavyweight boxers of his era. He remained amateur despite being offered US$10m to fight Mike Tyson and US$12m to fight Evander Holyfield. Savón believes he could have beaten Tyson. Speaking to ESPN in April 2015, he said: "I was a train, I was a punching machine, I don't think Tyson could have withstood me."
