Double barrier reefs are rare, with only six having been discovered to date. Of these, the largest is the Danajon Bank, which has a total area of 271.7 square km. It is located between the islands of Cebu and Bohol, Philippines, and has been formed by around 6,000 years of coral growth. The biodiversity of the reef is under threat by overfishing, despite being home to nearly 200 threatened species.

The outer part of the reef is around 11 km offshore and consists of several reef structures up to 23 km long. Just off the coast is the inner reef, which is up to 2 km wide.
