The most northerly species of owl is the snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus), native to the Arctic regions of Eurasia and North America. One of the few bird species that spends much if not the entire year within the High Arctic zone, during times of scarce food it will move farther north in search of food than any other species of bird, and has been recorded during the bitter-cold darkness of mid-winter as far as 82° N on Canada's Ellesmere Island.

Although some 145 species of bird breed regularly in the Arctic, few are High Arctic species, and even fewer spend their entire year there. Those few that do, other than the snowy owl, include the common raven (Corvus corax), gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), eider duck (Somateria mollissima), willow grouse (Lagopus lagopus), ivory gull (Pagophila eburnea), Ross's gull (Rhodostethia rhodea) and common redpoll (Carduelis flammea).
