The largest egg clutch laid by an owl is 13, which is known to have been laid by a single northern hawk owl Surnia ulula in Finland. A second record of a 13-egg owl clutch has also been recorded, this time from the snowy owl Nyctea scandiaca, but in this instance some authorities suspect that the clutch may have been the joint effort of two laying females, rather than just a single one.
In general, the snowy owl lays the largest egg clutch, with many records of 11-egg clutches having been documented. Clutches of seven eggs or more have also been recorded for the northern hawk owl and the burrowing owl Athene cunicularia, but many species lay far fewer, with some laying as few as two or three eggs per clutch, or even just a single egg.
