The largest genus of crocodile is Crocodylus, the true crocodiles, which contains no fewer than 12 species, including such notable representatives as the saltwater or estuarine crocodile C. porosus, the recently recognized desert crocodile C. suchus, the Nile crocodile C. niloticus, the American crocodile C. acutus and the mugger crocodile C. palustris.
The only region in the world co-inhabited by a true crocodile species (genus Crocodylus) and a true alligator species (genus Alligator) is Florida, USA, where these two mighty crocodilian genera are respectively represented by the American crocodile C. acutus and the American alligator A. mississipiensis. In crocodiles, the fourth lower tooth on each side of the jaw remains exposed when the jaws are closed, whereas in alligators this tooth is concealed.
