It was a few years after the invention of computers that anything resembling a programming language came into existence. However, as a lot of the earlier systems work differently to those in use today, most of them are no longer in operation. FORTRAN is a major exception: originally released in April 1957, FORTRAN has been widely used by programmers and companies for more than 58 years, and in continuous development during that time. The last major update only occurred in 2010.
