No other movie with a dragon as a central character has made more at the box office than the second instalment of J. R. R. Tolkien's Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug (2013). As of 17 April 2014, the fantasy movie featuring Smaug the dragon, as voiced by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, had grossed $960,366,855 (£572,796,000). While Smaug does appear in the first entry of the Hobbit trilogy – An Unexpected Journey (2012) – which grossed $1,017,003568, it is only a brief cameo, which means this can't qualify as a "dragon movie".
These takings overshadow those of any other dragon-based movie, including the two animated How to Train Your Dragon films by DreamWorks and the 2006 live-action adaptation of Christopher Paolini's book Eragon.
