Mariah Carey (USA) reclaimed the record she last held on Christmas Eve 2020 when “All I Want for Christmas Is You” accumulated 21,273,357 streams worldwide on Spotify on 24 December 2022. The festive favourite had previously recorded 17,223,237 streams on 24 December 2020 and 17,420,085 on Christmas Eve 2021 (at the time, second only to the 19,749,704 streams for Adele’s “Easy on Me” on 15 October 2021). At Christmas 2022, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” broke new ground by becoming the first track on Spotify to exceed 20 million plays across a single 24-hour period.

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” has now broken its own streaming total for five consecutive Christmas Eves: 8,069,105 (2017); 10,819,009 (2018); 12,028,987 (2019); 17,223,237 (2020); 17,420,085 (2021); and 21,273,357 (2022).

As of 1 January 2023, Mariah owned four of Spotify’s 10 biggest-ever streaming days, with her 2020–22 Christmas Eve efforts joined by the 16,216,593 plays amassed by the 1994 sing-a-long on Christmas Day 2022.

On 24 December 2022, “Last Christmas” by Wham! (19,079,817) also obliterated Mariah’s Christmas Eve 2021 mark for the most Spotify streams in 24 hours by a festive offering. The continued popularity of Christmas songs with music streamers comes as no surprise to chart-watchers, with Carey, Wham!, Brenda Lee, Bobby Helms, Michael Bublé and many others becoming regular fixtures in the upper reaches of festive countdowns in the US, UK and beyond and making millions in royalties for the writers and performers.
