On 24 December 2023, Mariah Carey (USA) logged 23,701,697 filtered streams on Spotify for “All I Want for Christmas Is You” – the sixth consecutive Christmas Eve on which the track had broken its own streaming total on the platform.

“Last Christmas” by Wham! also broke new ground on 24 December 2023, totalling 21,869,632 filtered plays to become the second-most streamed song on Spotify in 24 hours and the most streamed track by a duo or group.

At Christmas 2022, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” became the first track on Spotify to exceed 20 million plays across a single 24-hour period (21,273,357), and it has now broken its own streaming total for six Christmas Eves in a row after posting 8,069,105 streams in 2017: 10,819,009 (2018); 12,028,987 (2019); 17,223,237 (2020); 17,420,085 (2021); 21,273,357 (2022); and 23,701,697 (2023).

The continued popularity of Christmas songs with music streamers comes as no surprise to chart-watchers, with Carey, Wham!, Brenda Lee (“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”), Bobby Helms (“Jingle Bell Rock”), Michael Bublé (“It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas”) and many others making the upper reaches of festive countdowns around the world each season, raking in handsome sums in royalties for the writers and performers.

First released in the pre-Spotify days of October 1994, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” had accumulated more than 1.79 billion streams on the platform as of 10 January 2024.
