In July 2015, it was announced by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) that Rihanna (Barbados, b. Robyn Rihanna Fenty) had become the first act to reach 100 million gold (500,000 units) and platinum (1 million units) single sales certifications in the USA. Thirty-seven different singles contributed to the Def Jam artist's certifications tally, including the 9x multi-platinum "We Found Love" and three 6x multi-platinum hits: "Stay", "What's My Name?" and "Only Girl (In the World)". Rihanna's 100-million certified units puts her clear of the competition on the RIAA's "Top Artists (Digital Singles)" list, with Taylor Swift (89.5 million), Katy Perry (79 million), Kanye West (46.5 million) and Lady Gaga (39.5 million) trailing in her wake.
In June 2015 alone, Rihanna received 36 new multi-platinum, eight platinum and 14 gold certifications to push her over the 100-million landmark.
The RIAA have been dishing out single, album and video sales awards since 1958.
