Most critically acclaimed movie based on a videogame

As of 15 July 2015, the big-screen adaptation of fighting series Mortal Kombat (1995) had an aggregated review score of 58%, based on 12 critic reviews at Metacritic. This narrowly beat Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which scored 50% based on 38 critic reviews, and the animated film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) with 49% from 28 reviews. While "Most critically acclaimed" videogame records require a minimum of 20 critic reviews, we have used a minimum of 10 critic reviews for films. This accounts for the fact that films released before 1998 generally have far fewer reviews owing to the lack of online/recorded review outlets at the time.

The most acclaimed videogame film adaptation based on user scores at film site IMDB.com is Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, which scores 7.3/10 based on 5,880 users. Second is Resident Evil (2002), which scores 6.7/10 based on 183,210 user reviews. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is not listed on Metacritic.
