In July 2015, international female soccer stars from USA, Canada and Australia each won fan polls to appear on the cover of FIFA 16 – the first time female players have ever appeared on the cover of a FIFA game. In USA, fans voted for 2015 Women's World Cup winner Alex Morgan (USA). Australian fans voted for 21-year-old defender Steph Catley (Australia), and Canada fans opted for their national captain Christine Sinclair (Canada). As a result of these polls, each female star will feature alongside Argentina forward Lionel Messi on their respective regional cover of FIFA 16. Catley said: "I’ve always been a huge FIFA fan and knowing that I will be playable in the game, as well as being on the cover alongside Lionel Messi, is a career highlight for me." FIFA 16 was due for a worldwide release in September 2015 and features women's football as a playable mode for the first time.
